Our Story
Shelton & Company, CPAs, P.C. was founded in 1991 by CPA and former CFO of a bridge contractor, Fred C. Shelton, Jr., CPA, MBA. Fred understood and recognized the specific accounting needs related to contractors. He felt that having an accounting firm that dealt only with construction accounting would directly benefit construction companies of all sizes and types.
After the company he worked for was acquired in a business merger, he had a decision to make: Either stay with the new company or take a chance and start out on his own. He took the risk, and opened Fred C. Shelton, CPA, P.C. Over the years, Fred’s reputation grew to be a respected member and one of the top CPA firms in the state for its specialty. The company continued to grow and take on more clients, increased its staff size and soon Fred took on partners to expand the firm further.
Fred changed the company name to Shelton & Company, CPAs, P.C. He and his partners created lasting relationships with key professionals in the bonding and banking industry to help bridge the gap between construction companies and the financial sector. When Fred first started, his clientele was located primarily in Central and Southwest Virginia. Now Shelton & Company handles clients in many states throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Shelton & Company expanded its practice to offer not only comprehensive financial and accounting services, but also to offer valuation services for construction companies as well. Fred and his team of accountants offered seminars, and taught courses at local and national CPE conferences, published articles and offered their free time to sit on various boards in local chapters relevant to the construction industry. When Fred retired, he knew that he was leaving the firm he founded in very capable hands. Chad Maddox and Mason Brugh, who had worked beside Fred for years, took the reins and the company has thrived while the transition was seamless. The combined experience and knowledge among the staff at Shelton & Company spans decades and it shows in the services we provide every day.
Fred started this company with a very simple idea to provide specialized accounting services to the construction industry while maintaining exceptional customer service. That legacy continues on today.

Shelton & Company has a team of experienced and trained professionals, led by Chad Maddox, CPA, CVA, CCIFP, CCA and Mason Brugh, CPA, CCIFP, CCA, CCP. The professionals in our firm have numerous years of experience in the field of construction accounting. While there is a minimum number of CPE requirements to maintain professional certifications, our staff members exceed that amount maintaining continuing education in both construction accounting and general accounting principals.

Our professional staff is backed by a state of the art computer network desiged to provide you with all your accounting needs in a timely, efficient manner. The staff utilizes powerful Dell laptops with the latest Microsoft software and outstanding tax software to provide them with a portable office for visits onsite at your buisness. No matter where your company resides, our staff can bring our office to you. We also have access to one of the most extensive online tax research libraries and tax manuals to manage any tax circumstance or situation that may arise. We also subscribe to numerous publications and notification systems to keep on top of any and all changing tax regulations or codes whether it is Federal or any state that may affect your situation.
In addition, we maintain memberships in the American Institute of CPAs, and the Virginia Society of CPAs. We also belong to the Construction Financial Managers Association, The Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance, and the Associated General Contractors.
